Is your golf swing GOOD, BAD, or just plain FUGLY(Functionally ugly)
Most golfers don’t realize why they move the way they do. The facts are that we all move differently, there are no two people alike and therefore no two golf swings alike! So the question arises why do YOU move the way you do and can you move better?
We all have our own individual golf swing DNA, and it is this DNA that causes our swing to move as it does which often is why we have swing faults.
When i have a client come to me that wants me to fix their swing, my job is to help them realize that i can do more than just fix their swing, but I can also fix their life!
But first I need to know why they move the way they do. So for me to stand on the teaching bay and tell them to move a certain way without understanding why their body is moving the way it is wouldn’t help them in any way, shape or form.
The bottom line is your body moves the way it does for a reason, and even though the way your body moves is most likely not beneficial for your golf swing, it still does what it can do to hit the ball.
When your body moves incorrectly and i tell you to change and try to do something different, it might not be physically possible for you to do anything other than what you are used to doing. You might lack flexibility in the muscles that surround certain joints that will prevent your joints from moving as freely as they were meant to. If this is the case, then the lack of range of movement in these joints is preventing you from being able to make an efficient golf swing and at this point in time you are not able to improve your golf swing.
Stiffness and lack of mobility in your body is often caused for different reasons, for example, if your brain senses that you need to protect a part of your body that lacks strength, it will often shut down your freedom of movement in other areas of your body to protect you from injuring yourself. Or you may have had an injury somewhere in your body that previously prevented you from moving correctly and even though your injury has healed, your body has learned an altered movement pattern to work around that injury to protect you. It can take up to 6 months after an injury has healed before your body allows movement again and because of this it may never re-learn an efficient movement again so it becomes unbalanced and not able to activate the correct muscles at the correct moment in time.
The catch 22 is that this protective lock-down or lack of mobility may be adding extra stress in other areas because you are unknowingly asking your body to move in areas that weren’t meant to move to pick up the slack!
It is for this exact reason that if you have an injury, as hard as it is for your ego, you need to take a break! If you continue training while injured you will only be teaching your body to move in protective patterns that compensate for an effective movement which means you are pretty much teaching yourself to do something wrong!!!!
Your body is your body, and it could be that your body is good, bad or just plain FUGLY, and I do not mean this in the esthetical sense either! Infact your body could look esthetically sexy but not function well, or you might be big boned but have the ability to move very freely like John Daly. The way your body looks on the outside can be irrelevant to how well it works on the inside. So don't judge a book by it's cover!
So here’s the dilema you have now, if for whatever reason you aren’t able to move your body’s joints as they were meant to, then you are compensating for that lack of movement. This means that every time you swing a golf club you are strengthening those compensations to work around those limitations! Compensation for lack of movement means lack of power, lack of consistency and could very seriously lead to injury.
So in a perfect world you should drop everything you’re doing right now and get yourself moving better before you make another swing, lift another weight, or do another workout. Because if your movement pattern is a compensation and you just keep on training you will be strengthening that compensation and engraving it deeper in your nervous systems memory bank!
So what should you do to find out if your body is good, bad, or just plain fugly? I thought you’d never ask! I feel like i’ve been running around in circles here, just waiting for you to ask!

Now, i want to tell you a story about a member at the local Country Club that I work at. He is a retired gentleman that really wanted a copy of my book, so he asked his wife to give it to him for his birthday. A couple weeks after his birthday he came running across the parking lot saying that he got a copy of my book and in his own words he said it was a fantastic book. He said there was a lightbulb that turned on in his head when he read it, and that it was easy to read and fun as well. So i asked him if he'd done some of the exercises to help him move better, his response was.....No he didn't think it was for him, he said he was way to stiff in his body to try.....I said WHAT! I could not believe it....This book is exactly what he needed, he just didn't believe in himself enough to think he could do it! So i helped him with it and now after only a few short weeks feels great and he has already gained 50yards in his drives!
People, i repeat!...there's no time like the present!
