YOU - NEED - GOOD - POSTURE!
I remember as a kid everyone would always remind me to stop slouching and to stand or sit more upright! And with a lifestyle that is built up around sitting I almost felt as if my body was made of sillyputty! It just felt easier to let gravity take over and let my oversized noggin get pulled down to my lap! I seriously remember it felt like i was using more energy to sit or stand upright than to slouch…..
Do you sit a lot either at your job or leisure? Do you have good posture or do you relax letting gravity turn your body into sillyputty?
So what about todays generation, experts say that the smartphone is causing people to look down all the time checking for messages, Facebook, twitter, instagram, emails! The smart phone is like having a pocket sized computer with you at all times….this is a computer generation and i am not the boogyman because I’ve got to admit I enjoy it too!
So how come it is so important not to slouch then, after all it just feels right. The truth is that slouching has longterm destructive effects on your posture. It creates muscle imbalances that can lead to injury’s and serious limitations in your joints integrity. This means you will lose the ability to activate certain muscles and as a result be forced to over work other muscles in a desperate measure to function on a daily basis. Which will often also result in stiff joints that lack proper range of motion. Back and neck pain are often symptoms but the reality is that if you aren’t able to use the right muscles to function on a daily basis then you could have symptoms throughout your whole body!
What should you do then if sitting upright doesn’t feel right? Good question…stand, walk looking forward, play as often as you sit! If you are a kid, get outside and play, run, jump, fall, get back up again and do it over and over and over again creating a good all-round activation of your body’s muscles, teaching them to work together in athletic movement patterns.
Are you a grown up, what should you do then? Well it is NEVER ever too late to get better! But you will need to be more cautious. The chances are that if you all of a sudden go out and run, jump, and fall that you won’t get back up again, because you already have developed these muscle Imbalances and aren’t able to activate the correct support muscles to support these athletic movements when needed.
You’ll need to first get a physical screening to check for limitations that restrict you from moving efficiently, HOW? Book a screening with a TPI Medical or Fitness expert. Or if you don’t have an expert in the area, order a copy of the Golfers Handbook which amongst having a lot of expert advice on moving healthier, more efficient, dietary advice, proper warm-up and a ton of other nuggets to improving your game also has a physical screening to check your body for limitations. Just click on this link to order a copy for only $9.95
Once you’ve removed limitations that prevent you from activating the correct muscles, then you’ll need to train those muscles up again. This process is effective and you will usually feel improvement fairly soon after getting started. So stop denying yourself of a better lifestyle and get started today, because tomorrow is a long ways away!
So what about posture and your golf swing?
Well due to what I’ve mentioned above, the chances are you might have muscle imbalances that will affect how you stand in your golf posture. So for me to write that you need to have good posture in your golf swing would be similar to saying you need to stop slouching. But that wouldn’t necessarily be the best for you either if you all of a sudden feel like you have to arch your lower back to get your posture less slouchy. Getting too archy in your lower back in order to get less slouchy is a destructive way to take your posture, because it turns off your support muscles and often forces your body make an inefficient golf swing that causes more strain on your body which can lead to injury.
But if your golf posture is too slouchy, you will limit your range of motion drastically and most golfers that have slouchy golf posture have found alternative ways to move usually around these limitations so that they lose their posture in the backswing which causes loss of power, less consistency, and also a greater chance of injury.
Your posture is without a doubt one of the most influential things that will affect and more or less dictate how you will make your golfswing. So if you want to improve your golfswing you will need to improve your posture so that you can activate the correct muscles that will give you more power, consistancy and help prevent injury.
Here is a video that I did for 18Strong that fires a few tips at you that can help you with regaining good posture in your golfswing
