Who here has heard that saying you are what you eat?
Being told that you need to eat right is one of those things you just keep getting hit over the head with over and over and over again throughout life! I remember my mom preaching it when I was a youngster, and it almost felt like nagging, sort of the same as doing chores right? It almost felt like a punishment to eat right. Me and my brother used to take our bag lunch to school with our sandwiches made of my moms homemade bread that was so full of goodness that it weighed like a brick. While a lot of the other kids had wonder bread with processed junk on it and a can of coke to wash it down with. My brother and I were definatly labelled as un cool with our lunches, but we were actually pretty fortunate to have a mother that took the time to think about our health.
I know there are a lot of schools nowadays that serve fast foods in their cafeterias and it plays into the marketing of it’s much cooler to eat at some fast food joint or guzzle down a couple cokes or red bulls or some other tasty and easy food. Why? Good question, I suppose there’s got to be a certain image involved, feeling like a rebel, being a bad ass, doing what you know you shouldn’t. Then there’s always the ignorance of saying "I don't care" it won’t happen to me if i eat this. Or you might have grown up with junk food being served to you, well if that’s the case, then you’ll need to rise above your raising( I stole that from a good buddy of mine who loves quoting Dr. Phil….. it sounds a lot better when he says it, but I don't want to name drop...but for all of you #glisteners out there, you'll know who I mean!)
Then there is the addictive side of eating poorly. What do i mean by the addictive side of eating poorly? Well fast food products are full of sugars and omega 6 fatty acids and you may be shocked to learn that sugar is 20 times more addictive than crack-cocaine! Maybe there is some sort of correlation between eating junk food and being a junky then…?
Well the truth is, you do need to eat right and you need to start now!
Making poor choices in your diet and eating foods that are filled with refined sugar and carbohydrates will first of all spike your energy levels because your body will digest these foods into your bloodstream as glucose. Your pancreas detects the high level of glucose and produces insulin to break it down in order to help regulate your blood sugar levels. The insulin then pulls it out of the bloodstream and stores it in cells in your liver and muscles as glycogen for energy or stores it for later use as fat. The insulin has now removed the glucose from the blood stream causing your blood sugar levels to crash. This means you are all of a sudden running on empty!
Secondly your gut needs to have a correct balance of bacteria that will breakdown your food so that it can provide your brain with the correct nutrients to function correctly through the blood stream. If there is a poor balance of bacteria in your gut which is caused by eating poorly then you will often feel bloated and farty and weight gain can also be an issue. Not having the correct nutrients provided to the brain over time can result in many types of brain disease such as alzheimers, dementia, cancer, depression, ADHD to mention a few.
I know what you’re thinking now, how can i start, what do i do. Don’t worry my friends, be patient, i’m getting to that, but first….
Performance and eating right.
Your body and your mind are the two most important tools you have with you on the golf course. You quiet simply cannot hit a golf ball without your body, and you cannot shoot low numbers without your mind.
So let’s say your body is moving super efficiently like a V8 motor finely tuned and ready to fire on all cylinders, great! Now you need to remember to use the correct fuel to be able to get the most out of that engine, have you ever tried running a diesel engine with petrol? No? Then you need to try, here is my suggestion, you can both try and make a good impression on your father in law at the same time! Two birds with one stone, I love it! Okay, here's what you do, just borrow your father in-laws pick-up truck, yep, the diesel one with the gun-rack. After borrowing it, be sure to be a good son- in- law and fill it up with petrol!…. NO don’t do that! That was just a test to see if you valued your life! If you did it, it could be a sign that your brain isn’t receiving the correct nutrients and you need to change your diet now!
Okay, sorry we got a little side tracked on that one.
So your body is that V8 motor, and you need to use the correct fuel to get the most out of it.
When you play golf, you may have 5 hours out there, now this is where having a steady blood sugar level will help you throughout the whole round. Eating foods that are high in refined sugar and carbs, such as juices, soft drinks, cereal, sweetened yoghurts, chocolate bars, white bread, muffins and so-on will only overload your blood sugar levels making you feel good for a very short term and then very shortly down the road crash again. When you crash you make poor decisions and will suffer from lack of concentration or feel a little tired on the golf course. The same symptoms that a junky gets when losing their high. You will be easily irritable, which can then cause a spiral effect to your round, because even though you may be able to recover and stabilize your blood sugar, the damage may already be done, and the frustration you may feel may be even harder to overcome again while playing your round!
Here’s what you need to do.
Eat foods that release energy slowly so that your blood sugar remains level over a longer period of time. This will help you maintain your concentration and prevent your motor from breaking down!
