For a lot of us in the northern hemisphere our 2015 season is soon coming to an end! That’s right the curtains go down and the show will be over, well at least for this year! Well this is not necessarily a bad thing, because the end of the season means you are entering that time of year us golfers call the off season! The off season is the best time of year to improve and what you decide to do in your off season will make or break your next season! The off season is when you can literally MOVE MOUNTAINS in preparation for your next season!
But first take a minute or two to evaluate 2015…..
Did you improve, stay the same as previous seasons or was it your worst season ever? Where can you pick up lost shots and opportunities?
However your season was, it doesn’t matter, what matters is that you don’t accept it as your best! Even if you had your best season ever, great, congratulations…. But don’t accept it as your best, because you can still do better!
Start by getting out of results and start looking for the process to improvement.
You need to break down your off season and follow a process so that you can utilize it and ensure that your next season will be your best season!
Now Bend over and cough twice!
Start already here in september by getting a physical screening. NO, i don’t mean you have to go to your local physician to drop your trousers and bend over as he puts on his plastic glove and asks you to cough twice!
The physical screening you need is to check if your joints have full function so that you can have proper range of movement that will be relevant in how well you can make a golf swing. Your body is a fantastic instrument that is designed to move in specific patterns. However, if your body has limitations that prevent it from moving correctly you will be forced to compensate. You see, your body always searches for the easiest way it can move whether it be in you golf swing or in your daily life. If your joints have limited range of motion the easiest way your body can move will be to compensate and to move around those limitations. When your body compensates it forces the other joints of your body to work in ranges they weren’t meant to work in which in time often leads to injury but also means that your body isn’t working as effeciently as it should be! This means your golf swing has weaknesses that can lead to inconsistencies in your shots as well as lack of power!
The Golfers Handbook available on the link below on iTunes has the screening you need to take to see if your body is hiding the missing piece of the puzzle that will take your golf game to the next level for the next season.
Un-complicating your golf swing by regaining proper movement!
October/november is the time of year you need to get your limitations straightened out. That’s right! Get motivated and get those joints working again, movement, movement, movement is what these months are all about because if you don’t get your body rehabilitated and ready to move correctly then it doesn’t matter how the rest of your preparation for 2016 is, you will still only be teaching your body compensations! So un-complicate your golf swing by regaining proper movement!
After you’ve taken your screening i september and found out where your weaknesses and limitations are, you may be shocked at how limited you are! But don’t be shocked at how quickly you can regain movement, and it doesn’t have to be a full-time rehabilitation either. Often simple exercises that are targeted at improving your limitations, if done correctly, will get you on the right track to speedy improvement!
Take a new screening to check your progress! You should by now see improvement in any limitations that you might have had(I haven’t yet screened a golfer that hasn’t had limitations, so don’t feel bad). But improvement is what we are looking for and now is when we should see it!
If you have regained movement then you will perhaps need to reload your computer so that your body can learn how to work with this new range of movement! Teaching you correct movement patterns so that your muscles have the strength and the ability to fire in an efficient movement
Teaching proper movement patterns is what we need to reload in your computer. This can be done by doing a workout that is taylor made to you, again you can find some great tips in the Golfers Handbook that will assist you with this!
Though I would also highly recommend you visiting a TPI strength and conditioning coach that can help you with this, though if you haven’t got an expert in your area I would recommend you follow along and do the workout on this link from my friend and colleague Jason Glass.
The Experiment from Jason is a great all round workout that can be done in your home. It is demanding for all levels of athletes challenging your ability to move effectively, gain stability, learn proper muscle activation as well as proper sequencing. I challenge you to do this workout 3 times a week for a two month period and you just watch how great you will be moving!
Christmas is also a good time of year to spoil yourself or have Santa spoil you with a new golf equipment! The most important thing to consider here with new equipment is to make sure you have a proper fitting where you get proper advise, not just from a salesman/lady that wants to sell you something! Don’t make the mistake of going to a Golfsupermarket that uses Trackman/Flightscope or other launch monitors to close the sale. Don’t get me wrong, Trackman/flightscope or other launch monitors are great for fitting you, but go to a professional that you know and that knows your swing and that understands that fitting a golf set to you while you are working on improving your swing will only mean it won’t be fitted to you in a couple a months. Support a professional that is only interested in supporting you as your swing develops and in helping you improve with the right equipment that will help you for the longterm.
NEW YEARS January/February
Swing training and maintaining functional movement!
Now you need to visit the TPI Swing Coach! If you don’t have one in your area then again you’ll find some great tips in your own personal copy of the Golfers Handbook!
Because having great movement is only great if your body knows how to use this new range of movement!
Practice with a purpose! Make your training functional, mixing it up for every shot! It is proven that this type of random training, mixing it up with every shot will help you learn much more rapidly than practicing the same shot, same swing, same position or movement or what is called block training! This is the time of year where you need to take all your off season hard work and deliver it to the course! You need to mix it up trying to hit low shots-high shots, right-left, half swing- full swings. Take every shot as if it has a new purpose. Make two stations for every ball you hit on the range, shortgame area or where ever you are training by dividing it up with two boxes.
Station one is what you would call the think box, here you need to visualize how the shot should be hit, take practice swings, make club decisions, feel the calmness of how you want to execute the shot, and work on your breathing so that you feel relaxed and confident.
Station two is what you will call the play box, here you will execute the shot you imagined! Afterward you need to place a new ball ready to hit, then go back to station one and into the think box to evaluate and start again! Remember to go random and mix it up, NO two shots should be the same.
Remember regaining functionality, improving movement and preparing for the next season is a process! There is no time like the present to get started when it comes to improving your golf game!
So take ownership of your game, get started now and prepare yourself for the next season, because it is you and only you that is responsible for your change and improvement!
I hope you've enjoyed reading this issue and thank you!
